Between Feminism, Tradition, and Islamism

Social conflicts surrounding gender norms permeate Muslim-majority societies-ranging from feminist and traditionalist to Islamist movements. This book is the first to examine how such discourses not only structure identity and social order but are also instrumentalized by actors like the so-called Islamic State in its gender-specific propaganda. Using case studies from Morocco, Egypt, and Indonesia, it demonstrates how key issues-such as early marriage, male authority, and polygyny-are negotiated by diverse actors and simultaneously appropriated by ISIS. This leads to a new understanding of the discursive appeal of extremist movements.
